It’s not a cable precisely. but you can buy a device referred to as a video capture.

There is no cable that goes from S-vid to Firewire, as far as I know. If your only output option is S-video, you have a couple of options:

- buy a graphics card that has an S-video input (although, since you are running a Mac, this is not extremely probably as they are challenging to upgrade)

- get a new[er] / various camcorder that has standard Firewire outputs (I’ve witnessed really few gadgets that Don’t come with firewire how a lot did you spend for that camera?)

OR

- obtain a gadget like this: http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Goods/Consumer+Products/Dazzle/Dazzle+Video+Archiving/Dazzle+Video+Creator+Plus.htm

That specific one’s called Dazzle DVD Recorder or something equally asinine, but its function is useful: it permits you to capture video via S-video, USB, or RCA cabling. Plug the S-video cord at one particular end into your camcorder and the other finish (USB) into your personal computer, and it will fulfill essentially the same function as an S-video-to-firewire cable.

Be confident to store about, as $ 90 is way far more than this device is worth.

Cheers,
Jason

Did I get u proper? You mentioned uploading JVC miniDV tape footage to ur Mac and the vcam doesn’t have a DV/firewire port.

Kindly re-check ur JVC miniDV vcam – it shud have a DV/firewire (four-pin) port someplace as with all miniDV vcams… refer to beneath link:

You can’t go from S-Video (and, presumably, some kind of audio output) to Firewire with a cable — you need some kind of capture device, a computer or computer peripheral that can grab the analog video/audio and convert it to digital for you.

However, you probably don’t need it. You didn’t list your specific JVC, but every JVC DV camcorder I’ve seen has a Firewire port, going way back to the early 1990s.

One problem for users is that it’s never actually CALLED a Firewire port. See, while the Firewire specification was released to the IEEE (one of several groups that administers open standards for things like serial ports), Apple, the originators of Firewire, trademarked the “Firewire” name. So manufacturers have to call it something else, or pay extra money to Apple to use the Firewire Trademark.

So, on most camcorders, it’s called something else: maybe just “DV in/out”, maybe “IEEE1394″, maybe “i.Link”, or something else.

Another thing.. the Macbooks with Firewire all use a 6-pin Firewire connector (or, in some cases, the 9-pin Firewire800 connector). Most PC laptops and virtually all camcorders use the much smaller 4-pin Firewire connector. So if you looked all over your camcorder and didn’t see a port that matched the one on your Mac, that’s to be expected.

Here’s are pictures of the different sockets and cables:

ALL miniDV tape based camcorders have a DV port – this is the camcorder’s firewire port. It is a 4-pin firewire connection.

You did not provide us the model of the “JVC Digital Cybercam”, but it is likely that you are missing the camcorder’s base station (also called a docking station). The big plug on the bottom of the camcorder docks with it – and the firewire, USB and charging plugs are there.

Your MacBookPro has a firewire port – but we don’t know when you got it so we don’t know if the other end of the firewire cable needs to be 6-pin or 9-pin.

To answer your question directly, there is no (digital) firewire to (analog) s-video cable – but there are analog/digital bridges like those from Canopus that can do the protocol conversion… Camcorder plugs into the A/D bridge which plus into the Mac.
